Our story

Registered non-profit community organization for the Marathi speaking community in the western suburbs of Melbourne. Marathi is the official language of the state of Maharashtra in India. As per the 2007 census, there are more than 73 million Marathi speaking people and it ranks 19th in the list of most spoken languages in the world. WMM has more than 600 individual members as of 1/10/2017 and the count is growing every day. The objective is to have a community-based group in the west; as the Marathi speaking population is growing on this side of the city. In the last 3 years, we have successfully hosted 9 major events and additionally 6 workshops, with active participation from the wider community.

We are proud to say that the first Public Ganeshotsav for the Marathi community in Melbourne was started by West Melbourne Marathi and now its become our flagship event. WMM was initially formed as “Wyndham Marathi Mandal” around mid-2015 and was initiated as a facebook group. The group was later, around the end of 2015, renamed as “West Melbourne Marathi” to make it relevant as a community organisation for Marathi speaking people in the west Melbourne region. The broad intent of the group is to promote Marathi culture and provide a platform for the Marathi speaking community to celebrate Marathi festivals, events and other cultural activities. WMM was formally incorporated and registered as a non-profit organisation on 11th.
